The Structure Sensor is "The world's first 3D sensor for mobile devices", it features a depth sensor able to work within a range starting at 40cm to 3.5m and an onboard battery that provides up to 4 hours of active use. Another very cool thing is that, unlike the IR structured light projector, this one also emits a uniform IR light that will allow us to capture the scene in infrared. The sensor was originally announced working amazingly well with the iPad and also with the new iPhone 5S, but Occipital says that they will also provide open source drivers for Android and even OSX, Linux and Windows.
With all those great features and the fact that was designed to be portable, I believe that it will be a huge success. I wanted to be one of the first developers/hackers to try this thing out, so I decided to back this project and have access to this new amazing piece of technology. I can't wait to February 2014, when they promised they will deliver this sensor to their Kickstarter backers!
Also, I'm glad to say that this blog reached 15000 visits today and wanted to thank you all for your interest and the suggestions you send me by email. I will keep updating it little by little! Happy coding and hacking!

ReplyDeleteAre there any updates on how this project turned out?
ReplyDeleteHi Adrian, sure the project was successfully funded and they recently started shipping their first 100 prototypes to the people that pledged for the “STRUCTURE SENSOR BETA EDITION” . You can take a look at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/occipital/structure-sensor-capture-the-world-in-3d/posts/731139?ref=activity for more info
DeleteWe can create magical experiences which seems impossible to tell the virtual from the real coupled with the ability of structure sensors by the capture of dense 3D meshes of scenes.
